When the lovely team at Kilner tasked me with creating a trail mix recipe, I knew I wanted it to be moreish and one where you wouldn't want to take your hand out of the jar. Trail mix always reminds me of parties, there's always little bowls of fruit and nut mix dispersed on the tables and by the end of the night they're always empty. At home we also like to have little bowls of nuts and chocolates in the living room to snack one whilst watching the telly and you can guarantee we will need to refill them every week. There's something about nuts and chocolate that are really great (and possibly dangerous) at making you eat the entire bag. Which is why I am a big fan of jars of a mixture of foods.
So if you're like me and my family then you will love my sweet and salty trail mix recipe. You've got the salty nuts, and two varieties is key here, as well as the pretzels, then you get chewy bites of sultanas and then a lovely sugary hit from the chocolate. I've made some suggestions in the notes if you need to make changes to suit your own flavour profiles but this is a great baseline recipe to start with and it takes barely 5 minutes to put together. Jars of trail mix make wonderful little pressies, people always love edible gifts!
If you love nuts and chocolate....

Recipe
Prep: 5 minutes
Cook: n/a
Serves: x4 500g jars
Notes:
- Change the nuts to other varieties - walnuts and pistachios would also work really well.
- Some people aren't keen on sultanas, so any dried fruit could work here or if you could add sweets instead.
- Smarties or chocolate chips would also work instead of M&M's or any small chocolates really.
- Make sure to sterilise your jars first before filling.
- You could also fill x2 1 litre Kilner jars, but I think smaller jars are better for gifts or larger if it's just you at home.
Ingredients
- 200g cashew nuts
- 150g peanuts
- 130g pretzels
- 150g sultanas
- 200g M&M's
Method
- Simply add all the ingredients into a large mixing bowl and stir together well to mix so you get an even amount of everything in each jar.
- Scoop the trail mix into your jars and then seal.
- Trail mix is best stored at room temperature for up to 1 month once opened. Enjoy!
